The art of Raku Firing  (& Horsehair)

Learn the ancient art of Raku, a firing technique like non-other used to develop vivid colors and metallic sheens. An exciting, day where true magic and alchemy happens. This is by far one of the most exciting and dramatic firing techniques, guaranteed to yield some spectacular results – and you could be part of this experience

On the day you can choose two good sized pre thrown and bisque fired pots premade by professional potter.

You will then have the opportunity to design your own pots using tape & wax resist and up to 5 different color glazes with guidance and examples. (our studio members will have the opportunity to pre make there own pottery.

Raku – Horsehair Upgrade Starts one hour earlier and you will be guided through the process decorating your own Horsehair Pot (1 pot per. extra fee)
Must purchase the Raku workshop also. Horse Hair Raku : 10 – 3pm

 

 

Who can attend:  Anyone that has had the desire to witness this amazing process

  • The day’s workshop includes:
  • Raku firing of 2 good size pots (included in price) made by a professional potter
  • Hands on designing ,glazing and firing
  • All glazes for you to decorate your own pots up to 5 different glazes provided
  • Please be aware that raku pottery is not suitable for food service and vessels may be too porous to hold liquid.
  • You get to take  home on the day – two gorgeous pots designed and fired by you – a rarity in the ceramic process.

Please be open minded that we have a successful rate of finished pots
but things happen and its about the process. 

  •  What to bring: Please wear closed toe shoes, non-synthetic clothing (cotton, wool, and other natural fibers are more fire resistant) long pants and long sleeves, and please tie back long hair
  • Short Break  Byob /drink  / water & lite snacks provided

 

  • AYS Student Studio members
    will be given 6lbs. of special raku clay will have the opportunity to pre make there own pottery up to 4 pots or sculptures
  • Please be aware that raku firing does not produce work suitable for food service and vessels may be too porous to hold liquid.
  • Flat pieces like plates and wide bowls can be problematic and for purposes of the workshop are discouraged.

Artyard Studio is located at 5801 Main Street in the charming village of Williamsville and just outside of Buffalo New York.

There is plenty of off-street parking in our lot or in the evenings, next door.
